Spring Grove Monthly Meeting of Friends held 1st month 12th 1861.
The committee which was continued at last meeting to visit families produced the following report which is satisfactory to this Meeting:
To Spring Grove Monthly Meeting of Friends,
We, the committee appointed to visit a part or all the families belonging to said Meeting, have visited all the remote families, except one, as far as we know to good satisfaction.

The committee to receive and disburse relief funds report some attention to the subject, but that they are not prepared to make an explicate report at this time.
(P 28) The Friends appointed at last meeting to prepare a certificate of removal for Jefse Kenworthy and family informed the Meeting that they are not ready to report; they are continued and directed to report to next meeting.
The representatives who were appointed in the eleventh month last to attend the service of our last Quarterly Meeting report that they did not attend, but sent reasons for their absence.
Twenty copies of the minutes of our last Yearly Meeting and thirty copies of the London General epistle were received and distributed among our members.
The minute of our last Yearly Meeting on the state of society and the London General epistle were read in this meeting to our satisfaction and edification.
The following names of correspondents in New York, Ohio, and Indiana Yearly Meetings were directed to be entered on our minutes.

(P 30) The following extract from the minutes of our last Quarterly Meeting was received by, which it appears that this Meeting is directed to raise the sum of $2.50 for Yearly Meeting stock and $1.00 for the use of the committee on Indian Concerns. The following named Friends are appointed to make out an apportionment among our members for raising money and produce it at next meeting: James M. Dunbar, Asa Holaday and Simon Jones.
South River Quarterly Meeting of Friends held at Bear Creek 12th month 8th 1860.
By our last Yearly Meeting minutes it appears this Meeting is directed to raise fifty dollars for Yearly Meeting stock, and twenty dollars for the use of the committee on Indian Concerns, which sums the Monthly Meetings are directed to raise in their respective apportionments and produce it to this Meeting in the sixth month next.
By the minutes it also appears that this Meeting is directed to have voluntary subscriptions opened in subordinate Meetings to afsist Friends of North Carolina Yearly Meeting in liquidating the indebtedness of their Boarding School. Monthly Meetings are directed to therein as the Yearly Meetings direct and report in the ninth month next.

Spring Grove Monthly Meeting of Friends held 2nd month 9th 1861.
The first, second, and eighth queries were read in this meeting and the following answers thereto from the preparative which being approved were directed to be forwarded to the Quarterly Meeting in which as our representatives we appoint Calvin Barnard and Samuel Holaday who are directed to report to this Meeting in the fourth month next what may be given them in charge by the Quarter.
Answer 1st: All our meetings for worship and discipline have been attended by some Friends; others who reside at a distance from Meeting do not attend regularly. No unbecoming behavior in meeting. The hour of meeting is nearly observed.
Answer 2nd: No complain in the several heads of that query that we know of.
Answer 8th: No cause for complain in that query.
The committee to receive and disburse relief funds produced the following report.

(P 32) The Friends appointed at last meeting to make out an apportionment among our members for raising money produce the following which is satisfactory to this Meeting, and the treasurer is directed to receive the money which this Meeting was directed to raise by the Quarterly Meeting and he is directed to produce it to this Meeting in the fifth month next.

The Friends continued at last meeting in the case of Jefse Kenworthy and family informed the Meeting that they were not yet ready to report; they are continued and directed to report to next meeting.
The committee which was appointed in the eleventh month last to attend Cottonwood and Kansas Monthly Meetings to lay before them the subject of requesting for a Quarterly Meeting and also to confer with like committees of said Meetings produced the following report which is satisfactory to this Meeting, and the clerk is directed to forward to the Quarterly Meeting a suitable extract there from, sign on behalf of this Meeting.

The committee which was appointed in the eleventh month last to attend Cottonwood and Kansas Monthly Meetings and lay before them the subject of requesting for a Quarterly and also to confer with like committees of said Meetings report that part of the committee attended Cottonwood Monthly Meeting and laid the subject before them and they fully united in the proposition for a Quarterly Meeting and appointed a committee as contemplated by this Meeting. A part of the committee also attended Kansas Monthly Meeting and introduced the subject to the notice of that Meeting and Friends were near fully united in the proposition and appointed a committee and at the close of that meeting, a part of the committee from Cottonwood being present, the several committees met in conference and after a time of deliberation and free expression of sentiment were fully united in requesting the privilege of holding a Quarterly Meeting on the first seventh day in the third, sixth, ninth, and twelfth months. The meeting of ministers and elders on sixth day preceding at 11 o'clock to be known by the name of Kansas Quarterly Meeting and held as follows, at Kansas meeting house in the third and ninth months, at Cottonwood in the sixth month, and at Spring Grove in the twelfth month.

(P 34) A communication was received from Kansas Monthly Meeting of Friends held 1st month 9th 1861, informing this Meeting that a committee of that Meeting has visited Isaac Maris, agreeable to our request, to very good satisfaction, which is satisfactory to this Meeting and Isaac Maris is continued a member accordingly. Richard Mendenhall and Lewis Jones are appointed to prepare a certificate conveying the rights of membership to Kansas Monthly Meeting and produce it to next meeting.
A communication was also received from the same Meeting of the same date informing this Meeting that they had received a certificate for Seth W. Bray and family.
Samuel Holaday, James J. Dunbar and Calvin Barnard are appointed to propose to next meeting the name of a suitable Friend to be appointed overseer in the place of Lindley Durham, deceased.
John M. Coffin, having removed with his family and settled within the limits of South River Monthly Meeting of Friends, Iowa, requests our certificate of their right of membership conveyed to that Meeting. Richard Mendenhall and James M. Dunbar are appointed on conjunction with a like committee of Women Friends to inquire according to discipline and if they find nothing to hinder to prepare a certificate and produce it to next meeting.

(P 35) Spring Grove Monthly Meeting of Friends held 3rd month 9th 1861.
The committee which was continued at last meeting in the case of Jefse Kenworthy and family produced a certificate for all the family, except the oldest son in whose case there seems to be a , which was approved and signed.
The committee which was appointed at last meeting to prepare a certificate for Isaac Maris produced one which was approved and signed.
The committee which was appointed at last meeting to prepare a certificate for John M. Coffin and family informed the Meeting that they were not ready to report; they are therefore continued and directed to report to next meeting.
The committee to receive and disburse relief funds made the following report which is satisfactory to this Meeting.

Spring Grove Monthly Meeting of Friends held 4th month 13th 1861.
The clerk not being present, Samuel Holaday is appointed clerk for the day.
(P 36) The committee which was appointed at last meeting to propose the name of a suitable Friend for overseer proposed the name of Calvin Barnard, which is satisfactory to this Meeting, and he is appointed accordingly.
The committee which was continued at last meeting in the case of John M. Coffin and family informed the Meeting that they were not yet ready to report. They are continued and directed to report to next meeting.
The relief committee made the following report.

Balance on hand 35.35
The representatives who were appointed in the second month last to attend the Quarterly Meeting report that they did not attend but sent reasons for their absence and that nothing has been sent to their charge.
A proposition was received from South River Preparative Meeting of ministers and elders held 2nd month 22nd 1861, to appoint Milicent Jones an elder with which this Meeting unites and she is appointed accordingly.
The clerk is directed to forward a suitable extract from the foregoing minute to South River Preparative Meeting of ministers and elders.
(P 37) The following named Friends are appointed to superintend our first day school and are directed to report to this Meeting in the tenth month next: Samuel Holaday, Simon Jones, Richard Mendenhall and Charles O. Gause.

Spring Grove Monthly Meeting of Friends held 5th month 11th 1861.
The first, second and eighty queries were read in this meeting, and the following answers thereto which being approved were directed to be forwarded to the Quarterly Meeting in which as our representatives we appointed Robert Hodson and Lewis Jones who are directed to report to this Meeting in the seventh month next what may be given them in charge.
1st Answer: Our meetings for worship and discipline have been attended by most of our members; some are very negligent in that important duty; no unbecoming behavior to remark. The hour of meeting is nearly observed.
2nd Answer: Friends are preserved in love one toward another as far as we know, except in one instance in which some care has been taken. Tale bearing and detraction are discouraged. Some care taken to end differences.
8th Answer: Care is taken to deal with offenders seasonably and impartially. No deficiencies in the other part of that query.
(P 38) The committee which was continued at last meeting in the case of John M. Coffin and family produced a certificate which was approved and signed.
Agreeably to the direction of this Meeting in the second month last the treasurer produced the sum of $3.50 the amount which this Meeting was directed to raise by the Quarter which was directed to be forwarded to the Quarterly Meeting.

Spring Grove Monthly Meeting of Friends held 6th month 8th 1861.
A certificate was received, read and accepted from Lynn Grove Monthly Meeting of Friends, Iowa, dated 5th month 11th 1861 conveying to this Meeting the rights of membership of Charles O. Gause and Lovica his wife with their minor son Casper W. Gause. The clerk was directed to forward to Lynn Grove Monthly Meeting a suitable extract from the foregoing minutes.
The following named Friends are appointed to united with a like committee of Cottonwood Monthly Meeting in the division of books, donated for the use of Spring Grove and Cottonwood Monthly Meetings and they are directed to report to next meeting: Charles O. Gause and Richard Mendenhall.

(P 39) Spring Grove Monthly Meeting of Friends held 7th month 13th 1861.
The Friends appointed at last meeting to afsist in the division of books report that the service has not yet been performed; they are continued and directed to report to this Meeting in the ninth month next.
A minute was received from South River Monthly Meeting, Iowa, held 4th month 27th 1861, informing this Meeting that they had received our certificates of the rights of membership of Jefse Kenworthy and family.
The representatives appointed in the fifth month last to attend the services of our last Quarterly Meeting report that they did not attend but sent reasons for their absence.
A minute was received from our last Quarterly Meeting by which it appears that the Monthly Meetings are directed to raise the sum of two hundred and ten dollars in their respective apportionments for the purpose of purchasing a lot of ground for the use of the proposed Yearly Meeting in Iowa: Calvin Barnard, Charles O. Gause and Jefse Henley are appointed to solicit subscriptions for the purpose of raising the sum of ten dollars and fifty centers, our quota, and they are directed to report to next meeting what amount may be received.
(P 40) A minute was received from South River Preparative Meeting of ministers and elders proposing Jefse Henley as a suitable Friend to be appointed elder with which this Meeting unites and appoints him accordingly.
The clerk is directed to forward to South River Preparative Meeting of ministers and elders a suitable extract from the foregoing minutes.
This Meeting unites in appointing a meeting for ministers and elders to be held at this place at the Monthly Meeting in second, fifth, eighth, and eleventh months, and directs that such a meeting be held accordingly.
The following named Friends are appointed in conjunction with a like committee of Women Friends to visit Friends in Big Creek in Coffey County, as way may open for it, for their help and encouragement and they are directed to report to next meeting: Robert Hodson, Simon Jones, Charles O. Gause and Richard Mendenhall.
The following named Friends are appointed a book and tract committee for this Monthly Meeting: Jefse Henley, Lemuel Pemberton, Charles O. Gause, Samuel Holaday, Albert Jones, Richard Mendenhall, Lovica Gause, Mary Jones, Louisa Dunbar, Lucinda Barnard, Amanda Henley and Mary Pemberton.
(P 41) An epistle of counsel and caution from our late meeting for sufferings was read in this meeting to our strength and encouragement.

Spring Grove Monthly Meeting of Friends held 8th month 10th 1861.
The queries were all read in this meeting and the following answers thereto from the preparative which being approved are directed to be forwarded to the Quarterly Meeting in which, in which, as our representatives, we appoint Charles O. Gause and Lewis Jones who are directed to report to this Meeting in the tenth month next.
Answer 1st: All our meetings for worship and discipline are attended. Friends avoid unbecoming behavior therein. The hour of meeting is nearly observed.
Answer 2nd: Friends are in a good degree preserved in Christian love one towards another. Tale bearing and detraction are discouraged. When differences arise, endeavors are used to end them.
Answer 3rd: Friends generally endeavor by example and precept to educate their children in the principles of the Christian religion and in plainnefs of speech, deportment and apparel. They endeavor to guard them against reading pernicious books and from conversations. There is some deficiency in encouraging them to read the Holy Scriptures.
(P 42)
Answer 4th: Friends are clear of importing, vending, distilling and mostly clear of the unnecefsary use of intoxicating liquors. They are clear of attending shows and places of diversion. They most observe moderation and temperance on all occasions.
Answer 5th: No poor amongst us. The necefsities of the sufferers by famine have been looked after and mostly relieved.
Answer 6th: Friends maintain a testimony against priests' and ministers' wages, against slavery, oaths, bearing arms and all military service, except a few cases of military training, in which care is being extended. No trading in goods taken in war, or lotteries, as far as appears.
Answer 7th: Friends are careful to live within the bounds of their circumstances and to avoid involving themselves in businefs beyond their ability to manage. They are just in their dealings and punctual in complying with their engagements and in paying their debts seasonably.
Answer 8th: Care is taken to deal with offenders seasonably and impartially. No cause for complaint in the latter part of that query.

Answer 2nd: The scattered situation of Friends is such that we have not been able to support schools under the care of Friends.
Answer 3rd: Each family of Friends is furnished with a copy of the Holy Scriptures as far as appears and a portion thereof is read daily in some families but not in all.
Answer 4th: The queries addrefs to the Monthly and Preparative Meetings are read and answered as directed.
The advices were read in this meeting and considered.
The Friends appointed at last meeting to solicit subscriptions for raising funds for the purpose of purchasing a lot for the use of the Yearly Meeting in Iowa report that nothing has yet been received; they are continued and directed to report to the Meeting in the eleventh month next.
The Friends appointed at last meeting to visit Friends on Big Creek report that way has not yet opened for attending thereto; they are continued and directed to report to this Meeting in the eleventh month next.
A minute was received from Cottonwood Monthly Meeting held 6th month 13th 1861, by which it appears that the ministers and elders of that Meeting are directed to unite with the ministers and elders of this Meeting in holding a Preparative Meeting until further direction.
(P 44) This Meeting's committee on education made the following report which was directed to be forwarded to the Quarterly Meeting's Committee on Education. Our committee is continued and directed to report to this Meeting in the eighth month next.
Report
The Committee on Education have not been able to accomplish anything in the way of schools for various reasons, among which is the scattered situation of our members. The number of friends children of suitable age to attend school is 25, most of whom are in the way of receiving some instructions.

The committee which was continued in the seventh month last to afsist in the division of books informed the Meeting that they are not yet ready to report. They are continued with the addition of Lewis Jones and Robert Hodson and directed to report to this Meeting in the eleventh month next.
An epistle from the Yearly Meeting in London to Friends in America was read to our edification and comfort.

The representatives who were appointed in the 8th month last to attend the services of our last Quarterly Meeting report that they did not attend but sent reasons for their absence.
The committee which was appointed in the fourth month last to superintend first day schools report that way did not seem to open for holding first day school within our limits.
The following named Friends are appointed to propose to next meeting the name of a Friend for clerk and one for afsistant for the ensuing year: Simon Jones, Calvin Barnard and Abraham Holaday.

The committee which was appointed at last meeting to propose to this the name of a Friend for clerk and one for afsistant proposed the name of Richard Mendenhall for clerk and James M. Dunbar for afsistant, which being united with, they are appointed accordingly.
The committee which continued in the 9th month last to afsist in the division of books report that the service has been performed.
(P 46) The committee which was continued in the 8th month last to solicit subscriptions for raising funds to purchase ground for the use of the Yearly Meeting in Iowa report that nothing has been received. The committee is continued and directed to report to this Meeting in the second next.
The committee which was continued in the 8th month last to visit Friends on Big Creek produced the following report which is satisfactory to this Meeting.

William D. Jones for Wabash Monthly Meeting, Northern Quarterly, in place of Simon Wiltsie, who has removed from the limits of that Meeting. Addrefs, Wabash, Wabash County, Indiana.
William Hubbard for Pipe Creek Monthly Meeting in place of Eli Overman who is about to remove out of the limits of that Meeting. Addrefs, Xenia, Miami County, Indiana.
Hiram Coate for Center Monthly Meeting, Center Quarterly, in place of Joseph Doan deceased. Addrefs, Pointersville, Green County, Ohio.
Joseph Mather for Springfield Monthly Meeting, Center Quarterly, in place of Donathan D. Hadley removed out of the limits of that Meeting. Addrefs, Sligo, Clinton County, Ohio.
John H. Kenyon for Kansas Monthly Meeting, Kansas Quarterly. Addrefs changed from Leavenworth City, Kansas, to Springdale, Leavenworth County, Kansas.
(P 48) Thomas N. Jones requests a certificate to South River Monthly Meeting of Friends, Iowa, in order to accomplish marriage with Phebe Barnet, a member of that Meeting. Calvin Barnard and Richard Mendenhall are appointed to inquire according to discipline and if they find nothing to hinder, prepare a certificate suiting the case, which the clerk is directed to sign on behalf of this Meeting and forward, the time not permitting of waiting until next meeting.
The minute of our last Yearly Meeting on the State of Society was read in this meeting to our edification.

Spring Grove Monthly Meeting of Friends held 12th month 14th 1861.
A certificate was received, read and accepted from Salem Monthly Meeting of Friends, Iowa, dated 4th month 17th 1861, endorsed by Kansas Monthly Meeting of Friends held 11th month 13th 1861, conveying to this Meeting the right of membership of Elizabeth Burks. Also, one from Pleasant Plain Monthly Meeting of Friends, Iowa, dated 10th month 12th 1861, for Rachel R. Jones.
The clerk is directed to forward to Salem and Pleasant Plain Monthly Meetings the necefsary extracts from the foregoing minutes.
(P 49) The committee which was appointed at last meeting in the case of Thomas N. Jones reported that they found no obstructions to the ifsuing of a certificate in his behalf and that one was duly completed and forwarded.
James M. Dunbar and Calvin Barnard are appointed to afsist the Clerk in correcting and recording the minutes of this Meeting, and they are directed to report to this Meeting in the third month next.
Noah W. Hiatt, having removed with his family and settled within the limits of South River Monthly Meeting of Friends, Iowa, Simon Jones and Calvin Barnard are appointed in conjunction with a like committee of Women Friends to inquire according to discipline and if they find nothing to hinder, prepare a certificate conveying their rights of membership to that Meeting and produce it to next meeting.
Richard Mendenhall is appointed to see that Friends residing at a distance be supplied with copies of the Yearly Meeting minutes and he is directed to report to next meeting.
