The certificate was received, read and accepted from Richland Monthly Meeting of Friends, Iowa, dated 8th of 12th month 1859, conveying to this Meeting the rights of membership to Jefse Kenworthy, his wife Rachel C. and their minor children--James H., Sylvanus, Benejah Elwood, Oliver, , David, Damantha, John Milton and Emma.

Also, one for Eunice Kenworthy from the same Meeting of the same date.

The clerk was directed to forward to Richland Monthly Meeting an extract from the foregoing minute.

The following minute from our last Quarterly Meeting was read in this meeting and directed to be entered on our minutes.

To Spring Grove Monthly Meeting, Kansas, by our last Yearly Meeting minutes we are informed that the request of Three Rivers and Bear Creek Monthly Meeting is granted in regard to a Quarterly Meeting; said Quarterly Meeting to be opened at South River, the 2nd 7th day of 3rd month next; this Meeting therefore directs Three River, Bear Creek, Rich Square and Spring Grove Monthly Meetings to report to that Quarterly Meeting in future.

(P 5) Spring Grove Monthly Meeting of Friends held 2nd month 11th 1860.

A certificate was received, read and accepted from Back Creek Monthly Meeting of Friends, Indiana, dated 1st month 19th 1860, conveying to this Meeting the rights of membership of Jordan Elleman and his wife with their minor children, Emma and Eugene, also, of William and Elizabeth McDonald, minors under their care.

The clerk was directed to forward to Back Creek Monthly Meeting an extract from the foregoing minute.

The first, second and eighth queries were read in this meeting and the following answers hereto from the preparative, which being approved, are directed to be forwarded to the Quarterly Meeting in which as our representatives, we appoint John M. Coffin and Richard Mendenhall, who are directed to report to this Meeting in the fourth month.

1st Answer: That our meetings for worship and discipline have been attended generally by the most of our members, though some are very negligent in that religious duty, a few Friends seldom seen at meeting, some care taken; unbecoming behavior in meetings avoided. The hour of meeting nearly observed.

2nd Answer: Most Friends appear preserved in Christian love one towards another; though a manifest lack of that love in some; some care taken, tale bearing and detraction are discouraged and when differences arise endeavors are used to end them.

The minutes on the state of society, as contained in the minutes of our last Yearly Meeting, was read in this meeting to our edification.

Spring Grove Monthly Meeting of Friends held 3rd month 10th 1860.

The committee appointed at last meeting to distribute the minutes and other documents from the Yearly Meeting among our members report that the service has been performed.

(P 9) The committee appointed at last meeting to procure books of record and report to the meeting what sum may be necefsary to be raised as stock for the current year and to propose the name of a Friend for treasurer report that they do not think it expedient to procure books of record at present; they propose that the sum of three dollars be raised as stock; and that Simon Jones be appointed treasurer, with which this Meeting unites and Simon Jones is appointed treasurer accordingly.

John M. Coffin and Richard Mendenhall are appointed to solicit subscriptions to raise the sum adopted by this Meeting as stock, and they are directed to report to next meeting.

A certificate was received, read and accepted from Cane Creek Monthly Meeting of Friends, North Carolina, dated 4th of 2nd month 1860, conveying to this Meeting the rights of membership of Sarah Stout and her son, James Stout, and her daughter, Asenath Stout.

Also one from Mine Creek Monthly Meeting of Friends, Indiana, dated last month 11th 1860 for Jonathan Mendenhall and Phebe his wife.

The Friends appointed at last meeting to solicit subscriptions to raise the sum of three dollars for Monthly Meeting stock, reported that the sum is subscribed and partly paid in; they are continued to that service, and directed to report to next meeting.

A certificate was received, read and accepted from West Union Monthly Meeting of Friends, Indiana, dated 3rd month 12th 1860, conveying to this Meeting the rights of membership of Jonathan Wheeler and Esther, his wife, with their minor children, Cynthia, Joab, David, Julius, Mary, John, Sarah and Evan Wheeler.

A communication was received from Friends of Breckenridge County, Kansas Territory, by which it appears that they request the privilege of holding a Meeting for worship on first and fifth days of each week, a Preparative Meeting on fifth day following the first seventh day and a Monthly Meeting on fifth day following the second seventh day in each month, all to be known by the name of Cottonwood. After a time of solid consideration this Meeting united with their request and that it be forwarded to our next Quarterly Meeting.

(P 12) An extract was received from the minutes of last Quarterly Meeting calling the attention of this Meeting to the subject of first day Scripture Schools. The following named Friends are appointed to attend to the subject as directed by our last Yearly Meeting, and they are directed to report to this Meeting in the eighth month next: John Moon, Calvin Barnard, Jonathan Wheeler and John M. Coffin.

The following named Friends are appointed to attend the funerals of our members: Simon Jones and Calvin Barnard.

The Committee which was continued at last meeting to raise funds for Monthly Meeting stock report that the service is not yet completed; the further care of the subject is directed into the hands of the Treasurer.

Also, one from Pleasant Plain Monthly Meeting of Friends, Iowa, held 3rd month 10th 1860, for Sarah Winder and her minor son John Elwood.

Also, one from the same Meeting the same date for Thomas H. Winder and wife Martha B. and their minor daughter Elma.

Also, one from Fairfield Monthly Meeting of Friends, Indiana, held 4th month 19th 1860, for Cynthia Holaday.

Spring Grove Preparative Meeting complained of Asa Holaday accomplishing his marriage contrary to discipline. Calvin Barnard and Simon Jones are appointed to visit him on account of said offense and they are directed to report to next meeting their sense of his disposition of mind.

The committee appointed at last meeting to visit Asa Holaday report that they have had an opportunity with him to pretty good satisfaction. This meeting unites in continuing Asa Holaday in membership with us and appoints Lindley Durham .................

2nd Answer: Friends appear middling well preserved in Christian love one towards another, though a manifest lack of that love in some. Tale bearing and detraction is discouraged but not altogether avoided; some care taken, and when differences arise, endeavors are used to end them.

3rd Answer: We believe some Friends endeavor by example and precept to educate their children and those under their care in the principles of the Christian religion and in plainness of speech, deportment and apparel and to guard them against reading pernicious books and from corrupt conversation and to encourage them to read the Holy Scripture diligently. But we fear others are remiss in that important duty.

4th Answer: Clear in the several heads of that query, as far appears, except one instance of the unnecessary use of spirituous liquors, and a few instances of attending places of diversion. Some care extended.

5th Answer: No for complaint in the several heads of that query that we know of.

6th Answer: Friends appear to bear a testimony against priests' and ministers' wages, against slavery, oaths, arms bearing and against all military services, trading in goods taken in war, and against lotteries.

7th Answer: Friends are careful in the several heads of that query as far as appears.

8th Answer: No complaint that we know off.

Annual Answers

1st: No new Meetings settled within our limits.

2nd: No schools amongst us organized under the care of Friends. Each family of Friends is furnished with the Holy Scriptures.

3rd: The queries are read and answered as directed. The advises were read in this meeting.

The Friends appointed at last meeting to inform Asa Holaday of this Meeting's decision in his case, report complied with.

The representatives which were appointed in the fifth month last to attend our last Quarterly Meeting report that they did not attend but sent reasons for their absence.

By an extract from the minutes of the Quarterly, it appears that the Monthly Meetings are directed to raise the sum of twenty-five dollars for Quarterly Meeting stock. John M. Coffin and Lindley Durham are appointed to raise $1.25, this Meeting's quota, and forward it to Jefse Blair, the Quarterly Meeting's treasurer and they are directed to report to next meeting.

(P 18) By an extract from the minutes of South River Preparative Meeting of ministers and elders held 2nd month 25th 1860, it appears that Simon Jones and Elizabeth Holaday are proposed as suitable Friends to be appointed to the station of Elders, which are united with this Meeting, they are appointed accordingly.

The clerk is directed to forward suitable extract from the foregoing minute to South River Preparative Meeting as ministers and elders.

A communication was received from Bloomfield Monthly Meeting of Friends, Indiana, held 6th month 1860, requesting this Meeting to treat with Mahlon F. Holaday for accomplishing his marriage contrary to discipline. John M. Coffin and Simon Jones are appointed to visit him on account of said complaint and they are directed to report to next meeting their sense of his disposition of mind.

A certificate was received, read and accepted from Westfield Monthly Meeting of Friends, Indiana held 5th month 3rd 1860, conveying to this Meeting the right of membership of Asenath Burnside.

The clerk is directed to forward the necessary extract from the foregoing minute.

Report having reached this Meeting that some families of Friends belonging to this Monthly Meeting are in need of some afsistance. This Meeting unites in appointing a committee in conjunction with a like committee of Women Friends to visit such families for their help and encouragement and they are directed to report their care to next meeting. Lindley Durham and Simon Jones are appointed said committee.

(P 19) Richard Mendenhall and James M. Dunbar are appointed to ascertain the number of Friends children belonging to this Monthly Meeting who are of a suitable age to go to school and forward the same to the Quarterly Meeting.

A communication was received from West Union Monthly Meeting of Friends, Indiana, dated 6th month 11th 1860, requesting this Meeting to treat with Nathan Hinshaw for having been concerned in a lottery; Calvin Barnard and Lindley Durham are appointed to visit him on account of said offense and report to next meeting.

A lot of books were received as a donation for a library. Calvin Barnard, Asa Holaday and John M. Coffin are appointed to procure a bookcase and report to next meeting with the names of two suitable Friends for Librarians.

A certificate was receive, read and accepted, from Pleasant Plain Monthly Meeting, Iowa, dated 5th month 12th 1860, conveying to this Meeting the right of membership of John Bales.

(P 20) Also one from Back Creek Monthly Meeting of Friends, Indiana, dated 7th month 19th 1860, for Lemuel Pemberton and Mary his wife with their minor children Eunice and Eva.

Also, one from the same Meeting of the same date for Susanna Pemberton with her minor children, Joel, Anna, Cyrus, Mary and Jefse Pemberton.

Also, one from Back Creek Monthly Meeting of Friends, North Carolina, dated 5th month 22nd 1860, for Lewis Jones and Mary C. his wife with their minor children, Robert, Clarkson and Martha Eliza.

The clerk is directed to forward the necefsary extracts from the foregoing minutes.

The Friends appointed at last meeting to raise and forward the sum of $1.25, this Meeting's quota of Quarterly Meeting's stock, report that the service has been performed.

The Friends appointed to visit Mahlon F. Holaday report that they have had an opportunity with him to good satisfaction and that he wishes to be continued a member.

The clerk is directed to forward an extract from the foregoing minute to Bloomfield Monthly Meeting.

The committee which was appointed to visit some families that were likely to be in need of afsistance report that they have attended to that service, but found no families in need of aid.

(P 21) The Friends appointed at last meeting to ascertain the number of Friends children of a suitable age to go to school report that this service has been performed.

Our beloved Friend Enos G. Bray, a minister, attended this Meeting and produced a minute of unity and concurrence from Milford Monthly Meeting dated 7th month 28th 1860, whose company and labors of love have been satisfactory.

The clerk is directed to furnish the above named Friend with a copy of the foregoing minute.

Spring Grove Monthly Meeting of Friends held 9th month 8th 1860.

The Friends appointed at last meeting to visit Nathan Hinshaw report that they have had an opportunity with him, but that he was not willing to condemn the matter under complaint; after a time of deliberation thereon this meeting united in continuing the committee with the addition of Simon Jones, and they are directed to report to next meeting.

The Friends appointed at last meeting to procure a bookcase and propose the names of two suitable Friends for librarians report that they have not yet procured the bookcase. They propose Thomas N. Jones and Richard Mendenhall for librarians, who being united with, are appointed accordingly. The committee is continued and directed to report to next meeting.

The representatives appointed in the seventh month last to attend the Quarterly Meeting report that they attended but there was nothing give them in charge.

(P 22) A certificate was received, read and accepted from Back Creek Monthly Meeting of Friends, North Carolina dated 8th month 11th 1860, conveying to this Meeting the right of membership of Jefse Henley.

Spring Grove Monthly Meeting of Friends held 10th month 13th 1860.

The committee which was continued at last meeting in the case of Nathan Hinshaw report that he is still not disposed to condemn the matter under complaint; this meeting unites in directing the clerk to inform West Union Monthly Meeting of the result of our labors.

The committee which was continued at last meeting to procure a bookcase report that a bookcase can be obtained for the sum of $4.50 which is satisfactory to this Meeting.

Seth W. Bray and family, having removed and settled within the limits of Kansas Monthly Meeting, request our certificate of their rights of membership conveyed to that Meeting. Lindley Durham and Albert Jones are appointed in conjunction with a like committee of Women Friends to inquire according to discipline, and if they find nothing to hinder, to produce a certificate to next meeting.

(P 23) Isaac Maris, a member of this Meeting who resides within the limits of Kansas Monthly Meeting, having accomplished his marriage contrary to discipline, Simon Jones and Richard Mendenhall are appointed to write to that Monthly Meeting, requesting them to treat with him on our behalf, and they are directed to report to next meeting.

The following named Friends are appointed to propose to next meeting the name of a suitable Friend to fill the station of overseer in place of John M. Coffin who has removed beyond the limits of this Meeting: Asa Holaday, Lindley Durham and James M. Dunbar.

The following named Friends are appointed to propose to next meeting the name of a suitable Friend for clerk and one for afsistant for the ensuing year; James M. Dunbar, Simon Jones and Lindley Durham.

The clerk was authorized to draw on the treasurer for the sum of one dollar to defray the expense of paper and postage for the past year.

A part of the committee appointed by our Quarterly Meeting to visit Monthly and Preparative Meetings, families and individuals as way might open, attended this Meeting, whose company and labors have been acceptable.

(P 24) Spring Grove Monthly Meeting of Friends held 11th month 10th 1860.

The committee appointed at last meeting to propose to this the names of a suitable Friend for clerk and one for afsistant proposed the name of Richard Mendenhall for clerk and James M. Dunbar for afsistant, who being united with, they are appointed accordingly.

The committee which was appointed at last meeting to prepare a certificate of removal for Seth W. Bray and family, produced one which was approved and signed.

The Friends appointed at last meeting to write to Kansas Monthly Meeting on account of Isaac Maris report that the service has been performed.

The Friends appointed at last meeting to propose to this the name of a suitable Friend for overseer in the place of John M. Coffin proposed the name of Simon Jones, who being united with, he is appointed accordingly.

This Meeting, having taken into consideration, the remote situation of Friends in this territory from any Quarterly Meeting of Friends and the great difficulty there is in attending such meetings, after a free and full exprefsion on the subject, is united in appointing the following named Friends to attend Cottonwood and Kansas Monthly

(P 25) Meetings of Friends and lay the subject before them, and if those Monthly Meetings are united therein, to converse with like committees of said Meetings on the propriety of requesting the privilege of holding a Quarterly Meeting in this territory, and they are directed to report to this Meeting in the second month next: Lindley Durham, Simon Jones, Calvin Barnard, Charles O. Gause, Richard Mendenhall, Asenath Parker, Sarah Ann Mendenhall, Elizabeth Holaday and Milicent Jones.

The following named Friends are appointed our representatives in our next Quarterly Meeting and they are directed to report to this Meeting in the first month next what may be given them in charge by the Quarter: Calvin Barnard and Lindley Durham.

A concern having arisen in this Meeting to visit some families of Friends belonging to this Meeting. Simon Jones and Lindley Durham are appointed in conjunction with a like committee of Women Friends to visit such families as way may open for, and they are directed to report to next meeting.

Calvin Barnard, Richard Mendenhall and Lindley Durham are appointed to ascertain the wants of our members in the way of clothing and provisions for the winter; and if they should find it necefsary, to apply to our next Quarterly Meeting for afsistance, and they are directed to report to next meeting.

(P 26) Spring Grove Monthly Meeting of Friends held 12th month 8th 1860.

The Friends appointed at last meeting to visit such families of Friends within our limits as way might open for report that they have visited some families but they do not feel quite clear; they are therefore continued, and directed to report to next meeting.

The Friends appointed at last meeting to ascertain the wants of our members in the way of clothing and provisions for the winter report that they have made some inquiry and found some Friends in need of some afsistance, and also that some means of relief is now being received, which is satisfactory to this Meeting. The following named Friends are appointed to receive and disburse whatever may be sent to us for the relief of Friends and others and they are directed to report to this Meeting monthly, so long as they may find service to perform: Calvin Barnard, Simon Jones, Lindley Durham, Richard Mendenhall and Samuel Holaday.

Jefse Kenworthy, having removed with his family and settled within the limits of South River Monthly Meeting of Friends, Iowa, requests our certificate of the rights of membership conveyed to that Meeting. Simon Jones and Samuel Holaday are appointed in conjunction with a like committee of Women Friends to inquire according to discipline and if they find nothing to hinder, to prepare a certificate and produce it at next meeting.
